Press Release: Thetford Town Council To Launch Its First ‘Pocket Park’

Councillor Terry Jermy With Community And Environmental Services Manager Nick Thompson

Thetford Town Council is excited to announce Thetford’s first ‘Pocket Park’ – in a bid to tidy up and improve community spaces across the town.
Thetford’s first pocket park will be located in the town centre, next to the Carnegie, and will see an area transformed into a sensory garden.
Councillor Terry Jermy, a key advocate for this initiative, stated: “We all know of unloved spaces across Thetford that could be repurposed. Pocket parks are about turning these areas from something messy into something better, increasing biodiversity and creating havens for wildlife”.
The design, created by local contractor Roots & Routes, features a sensory-themed area that will include plants chosen for their various scents, textures, and sounds. Additionally, it will incorporate plants that attract butterflies and bees, supporting the Town Council’s conservation efforts.
The first phase of the project involves removing the existing paving, levelling the surface, and preparing the landscaping of the site. Following this, the Council will collaborate with community members, including residents and volunteers from Thetford in Bloom, to assist the contractors in planting the area. Once complete, the park will include seating areas and other environmental features such as bird boxes and feeders.
The aim is for this ‘Pocket Park’ to be the first of several to be established in Thetford. The Town Council is actively seeking support from Breckland Council to identify additional suitable areas for future pocket parks.
We welcome businesses and organisations to participate in this initiative.
