Nestled in the unique Brecks area, Thetford is a historic gem and the former ancient capital of East Anglia. Its roots stretch back over 2,000 years, offering a fascinating journey through England’s history—from its Iron Age origins and Roman fortifications to its medieval monasteries and role as a thriving Georgian and Victorian hub. Thetford is a gateway to both history and nature, with the Brecks providing a nationally significant habitat for wildlife and a stunning natural landscape.
Thetford has seen an extraordinary array of people, cultures, and stories. It boasts one of Britain’s oldest Mayoral traditions, extending over eight hundred years, and has been home to some remarkable figures – from the famous Iceni warrior queen Boudica to the 19th-century radical Thomas Paine, whose ideas shaped modern democracies.
Thetford is also known for having Britain’s first Black Mayor, Allan Minns, who was elected to the Council in Thetford in 1903 and became the Town Mayor in 1904, he was known as a pioneer for positive change within the community.
World War II brought a new chapter to Thetford’s history, with the town serving as a crucial training ground for Allied forces, including the famous Desert Rats who were part of the 7th Armoured Division.
In more recent times, Thetford has become affectionately known as the “Home of Dad’s Army,” with the beloved TV series filmed in and around town and surrounding areas. Today, Thetford remains a lively community, enriched by the diversity and contributions of its multicultural residents.
